Using same laptop for multiple ECU GN cars

I wasn't sure if this qualified to fall under the FAQ section so please move it if it belongs in Tech Help.

I have been using the same laptop to tune multiple cars (Well, just 2 so far) and was wondering how important it is that the project files match up for the specific car.

I also got an error message (that I didn't take a screenshot of) that the firmware didn't match and I proceeded through it and it seemed to work.

Is it important that the matching project file be used for that specific car?

If so, would a good method be to copy the folders for each individual car to the single laptop and then open projects from the folder that matches with the car?

Or is it OK to just open a TunerStudio sessions and just use the "Use Controller Settings" and go from there?

I would copy each cars project folder to your laptop so you can keep them separate. You might have some ECU's with newer or older firmware, and the project folder config goes with that particular ECU. Also, some people might have different sensor setups, like fuel pressure, or oil pressure, and have gauges set up on the dashboard. All that is saved with the project folder.

If they all had the same firmware version, then yes you could do the "use controller settings", and the tuning would be the same. If you turn off these options in the picture below, it will always just pull the tune from the ECU when you connect, but you have to make sure you save the tune when done tuning (it should prompt you if changes were made), and no 'CurrentTune.msq' will be created. Sometimes this is helpful when one person is tuning multiple cars, to avoid accidentally loading the wrong 'currentune.msq' into a different car.

For each new car, copy the entire project from the jump drive onto your laptop in a "tunerstudio projects" folder. Each car has it's own project file dedicated to that specific vehicle.

When you start tuner studio, just select the project for that particular car and everything will be there ready to go.

Thanks for the tips. I was looking for a methodology to use moving forward and I won't have to think about it again so this really helped guide me.

One the matter of firmware though, is it possible to update any ECUGNs that come along with different/older firmware so that all of them that I touch are all at the same level?

Or is the firmware something that matches up when the ECUGN is created and shipped out and needs to be the same for pretty much it's whole life?

Yes the firmware can be updated on any of them to the newest version. I can email you the info on that when you you're ready. All ECU's with serial #400 and higher have the latest '1.5.2 Release' firmware. Before that, most of them were '1.5.2 Beta 5'. The changes between the two are small, and most people won't notice the difference, but there are some small improvements/fixes.

Hi Eric,

I would like to take you up on that so that the units have the latest. I think the furthest back one I have is 327.
